Uber makes a play for Lombok tourism market

Uber has expanded its footprint east to the Indonesian holiday island of Lombok.

Tourist demand in Lombok is soaring and infrastructure is developing at a rapid pace as one of the Indonesia tourism ministry’s key destinations being promoted.

Uber Indonesia has rolled out in the islands capital Mataram with the uberX and uberTrip services.

It marks the 30th city and seventh island In Indonesia with Uber coverage, Uber Indonesia’s head of communications Dian Safitri told local media.

UberX is the point-to-point ride service for up to four passengers and uberTrip offers a tourist-friendly charter-like service of several hours, enabling visitors to enjoy island-wide private tours.

The uberTrip service has seen high demand from tourists in neighbouring Bali.

It enters the market with support from local officials, Dian said.

"We have communicated our presence here, and we are happy to get support from the government as stakeholders."

Uber is currently cooperating with the transport cooperative Trans Usaha Bersama to introduce the service which officially began last week.

The company plans to educate and promote more awareness of ride sharing in the local community, while boosting its pool of driver partners.

"We will focus on education and minimise waiting time for passengers, because we hope to be part of the transportation ecosystem and develop tourism here," said John Colombo, head of public policy and government affairs.
