United flight diverted after possible space debris impact

An investigation is ongoing after a United Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing due to a shattered windscreen.

Flying glass injured a pilot who was seen with cuts to his arm.

The unconfirmed image also showed broken glass in the cockpit.

The flight had to divert to Salt Lake City last week after departing Denver.

It was due to an unknown object, with an impact with falling space debris a possible cause.

Due to the high cruising altitude at the time of impact, a bird strike has been ruled out.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident on the Boeing 737.

It said it is collating radar data, weather and flight recorder information.

“United flight 1093 landed safely in Salt Lake City to address damage to its multilayered windshield. We arranged for another aircraft to take customers to Los Angeles later that day and our maintenance team is working to return the aircraft to service,” the airline said.
