Vanuatu welcomes first post-earthquake cruise ship visit
Pacific Island nation Vanuatu has welcomed its first cruise ship after an eight-month hiatus.
Carnival Adventure tendered there, making it the first cruise ship visit since the 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the capital on 17 December.
Vanuatu’s tourism industry hailed the ship’s arrival as a key milestone in its post-earthquake recovery.
It arrived at Mystery Island and then Port Vila, and was officially welcomed by Vanuatu Tourism Office officials and other tourism stakeholders.
The ship was carrying over 2,800 passengers.
“The Port Vila community has done it tough without cruise visitors this year, so it’s great Carnival guests can help lift spirits, while spending money with local businesses,” said Carnival Country Manager, Peter Little.
A Carnival Australia representative and Minister for Trade & Commerce, Samson Samsen and Deputy Prime Minister, Johnny Rasu Koanapo gave speeches, while traditional entertainment was laid on for guests and locals.
Carnival Splendor is also scheduled to visit Vanuatu this month.
