Wendy Wu, Intrepid return to Myanmar
Asia group tour specialists Wendy Wu Tours is back in Myanmar after being absent from the country for three years.
Staff accompanied Australian travellers on the inaugural tour to see first-hand how the country has adapted to changes over recent years.
And Intrepid Travel has added a further 36 departures for its Best of Burma tour in response to exceptional demand from passengers.
Before it added the new dates, 99% of trip places available in 2012 had been sold, and some departures scheduled for 2013 were already fully booked.
The adventure travel company recommences tours in Burma later this month and will now offer weekly departures of its 15-day itinerary throughout most of the year.
“There’s been an incredible response to Aung San Suu Kyi’s call for tourists to return to Burma,” said James Thornton, Intrepid Travel’s general manager, global sales.
The Myanmar government is undertaking limited reforms ahead of April elections when opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi hopes to win a seat in the polls.
Myanmar tourism authorities said recently they are targeting 50 new hotels, nationwide in the lead up to hosting the 27th Southeast Asian Games in 2013.
