Tourists missing in Dominican Republic might have crashed into sea

Police searching for a New York couple who went missing while on holiday in the Dominican Republic two weeks ago believe their hire car might have crashed into the sea while they were driving to the airport.

They revealed that a woman who was found unconscious on the road to Santo Domingo international airport on March 27, the day the couple were due to fly home, might be that of missing Portia Ravenelle, aged 32.

She was taken to hospital but died eight days later.

A body of a male, believed to be that of missing Orlando Moore, aged 43, was discovered at sea, near Sans Souci, on March 31.

The bodies are in the process of being fingerprinted to confirm their identities.

Police spokesman Colonel Frank Felix Durn said fishermen found the car wreckage in the water close to a road where they would have likely driven to get to the airport.

They were last seen heading to the airport on March 27 at the end of their holiday, where they stayed at the all-inclusive Grand Bahia Principe Cayacoa resort in Saman-¡.

Duran said neither was carrying identification and divers have been unable to recover the vehicle from the seabed yet to check their belongings.

Police have contacted the US embassy to help with identification.
For several days there were fears of foul play with kidnapping a possibility, but police say they have found no evidence of this.
