United parent drops 'Continental' from its name

United Airlines has bid farewell to the Continental reference in its parent company's formal name.

The airline business wants to 'show the world we're truly a united United' and now becomes United Airlines Holdings Inc.

It comes nine years after the United-Continental merger, which faced problems in the early years transitioning to a single reservations system, rostering and moving to a single labour contract for flight crew.

The Continental name had already disappeared from the airline brand but has stayed as part of United's holding company name.

In an internal memo, the airline said: "The name change reflects our desire to move our airline forward. It marks another step on our journey of showing, not just investors but the world, that we're one team."

It will continue trading under the abbreviation UAL.
