A tourist has died and another person was injured after a volcano unexpectedly erupted on the Italian island of Stromboli.

Reports say the tourist, believed to be a 35-year-old Italian from Sicily, was hiking on the island at the time. His Brazilian friend who was hiking with him was found to be suffering from dehydration and shock.

Around 30 other holidaymakers, including several British tourists on the island's beaches, ran into the sea when they heard the explosion from Mount Stromboli. Some tourists are believed to be missing.

The Foreign Office said locals authorities have responded and are monitoring the situation.

"There are no reports of significant impact on populated areas, but local authorities are assisting those on the island who wish to leave; if you're in the area, you should follow the advice of local authorities," it said.

Tourists often climb to the summit of the volcano to look into its crater.

Witnesses say the island was covered in a cloud of ash.
