Airbnb imposes age restriction on rentals in Canada following shootings

Airbnb has launched a pilot programme banning people under 25 from booking entire properties in Canada following recent shootings at holiday homes.

The crackdown will not affect guests with a track record of positive reviews on Airbnb.

The rental platform says it will also use additional security measures to verify guests.

It has already banned the use of Airbnb as party houses after a California shooting last year.

Three young people were killed in a shooting at a Toronto Airbnb last week and one person was shot dead and others were injured during an earlier incident at an Ottawa Airbnb.

Airbnb is also establishing a 24/7 neighbour hotline in Canada manned by 'rapid response agents' to deal with issues.

"Nothing we're going to say or do will bring back those lives, but we're certainly going to talk about what we should do from a responsibility perspective," said Chris Lehane, SVP of global policy and communications.

"The issue of gun violence goes well beyond this particular action that we are identifying and taking. But we do think it is a step in the right direction."

Airbnb also said it will donate $300,000 to Canadian Doctors for Protection from Guns.

The new age restriction is limited to Canada at the moment but could be expanded if it proves effective.
