American Airlines extends elite loyalty status

American Airlines has joined its main rivals in extending all elite AAdvantage members' benefits.

They will have their current tier extended by one year through January 31 2022.

The new expiry date will be displayed in members' accounts online within the next few weeks, the airline said.

In addition, various elite status qualifications will be reduced for 2020.

It includes lower thresholds for Executive Platinum rewards.

It is also extending purchased Admirals Club memberships for six additional months.

"We are grateful to our AAdvantage members and want to show them that loyalty is a two-way street," said AAdvantage program VP, Bridget Blaise-Shamai.

Every dollar spent on eligible AAdvantage co-branded credit cards until the end of this year will earn one mile toward Million Miler status.

Other airlines including Delta, Alaska Airlines and United Airlines have extended their loyalty program benefits
