Families to sue Royal Caribbean over White Island volcano eruption

Survivors and victims' families from the White Island volcanic eruption tragedy last year are planning to sue Royal Caribbean.

Twenty-one people died when the volcano erupted last December..

Sydney-based Lawyer Rita Yousef says a lawsuit is imminent with one Australian family confirmed as plaintiffs and several other survivors and families of victims likely to join.

Yousef said there was 'no indication at all that Royal Caribbean was paying attention' to the increasing seismic activity and added risk of the volcano erupting.

"At the very least they should've informed their tour participants of the risk and let them decide if they wanted to take the risk," Yousef told AFP.

"We can go one step further and ask why were they even running these tours when there was such high risk?"

The lawsuit will focus on the cruise line's alleged negligence, breach of contract and consumer law violations.

"We've got people having to deal with absolutely profound and unimaginable disability, the kinds of burns that a lot of medical professionals have never seen in their lives," Yousef added.
