ATOL renewals report delayed until Friday

The Civil Aviation Authority is to delay publishing the list of companies that renewed their ATOL licences by today's deadline until Friday.

Around 800 ATOL-holders were expected to apply to renew their licences by midnight after the CAA extended the deadline for applications from March 31 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It said companies that were dealing with mass cancellations following the Foreign Office ban on all non-essential travel in mid-March had needed time to focus on their customers and manage their own financial position.

The CAA took a similar decision to extend the ATOL renewals deadline after Thomas Cook ceased trading last year, with the aim of enabling ATOL holders affected and the CAA to focus resources on dealing with the fallout of the travel giant's collapse.

A source close to the process said the ATOL team had been working through last night to process the applications and the confirmation of the number of companies that succeeded in renewing their licences is expected to be published at the end of the week.
