Florida Keys to reopen to tourists on June 1

Florida Keys will start accepting holidaymakers again from June 1 but hotels might only book 50% of guest rooms to comply with social distancing rules imposed by Monroe County Officials.

Also, all tourist accommodation must follow the American Hotel and Lodging Association's Covid-19 cleaning guidelines.

The Keys has been closed off to non-residents since mid-March but has recorded just three deaths from Covid-19 and 100 confirmed cases.

"It's time to start moving forward. The checkpoint has done what it's needed to do," said county spokesperson Kristen Livengood.

"Should the Florida Keys experience an increase in cases and under the advisement of the Florida Department of Health, restrictions may be heightened and amenities may again be closed," Livengood added.

Airport screenings and bus restrictions will also be lifted on June 1.

Keys residents are urged to keep following social distancing restrictions to help contain the spread of the virus.

Restaurants are also allowed to open at 50% capacity, but bars remain closed.
