California theme parks demand to see data used to keep them closed

California's theme park industry wants to see the data the state is using to keep large theme parks closed.

"Parks have been opened throughout the country and the world for months and we have seen no data indicating that Covid outbreaks are being traced back to theme parks," said California Attractions and Parks Association Executive Director Erin Guerrero.

"If they can reopen safely in other states and countries, then why not in California?"

"We continue to ask the administration to share any data to theme parks that they are using to inform their decision to keep the major theme parks closed indefinitely while allowing similar venues to reopen," Guerrero added

It came after California Gov. Gavin Newsom defended the state's strict criteria for a reopening of large theme parks.

Parks such as Disneyland and Universal can only open when the counties they are located in are downgraded to the 'low risk' tier based on rolling infection rates.

Based on the current situation, that could take weeks or even months.

"The guidelines from the governor's office mean that Disneyland and Disney California Adventure park will not be reopening anytime soon," Disney said this week in a letter to local residents.

However the company said it will partially open Disney California Adventure for shopping and dining only from next month.
