Cyprus added to quarantine list as travel corridor dwindles further

Travellers returning from Cyprus from the early hours of Sunday will have to quarantine for two weeks following the latest changes to the government's travel corridor.

People arriving from Lithuania will also be forced to self isolate.

The removal of both countries from the safe travel list kicks in from 4am on Sunday.

In his usual Thursday afternoon Twitter announcement, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said no destinations have been added to the travel corridor.

While Cyprus has been on the government safe list for a while, tourism from the UK has been subdued all summer after Cypriot authorities made it a requirement for arrivals to produce a negative Covid test.

Nevertheless, ABTA said the removal of Cyprus was another blow for the industry.

"The industry's optimism from last week's good news has been short-lived following the removal of Cyprus from the travel corridor list," a spokesperson said.

"Last minute changes like this further erode consumer confidence in overseas travel and serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need to introduce testing to cut quarantine."

"We need to get people travelling again to support travel businesses and save jobs. The government needs to urgently act on testing, introduce a regional travel corridor approach and lift the global travel advisory against non-essential travel by moving back to country specific advice."
