Hawaii island offers discounts to visitors to take extra Covid test

As Kauai rejoined Hawaii state's Safe Travels program, the island is offering an extra incentive to keep residents and visitors safe and healthy.

It is asking visitors to voluntarily take a second Covid-19 test three days after arrival and will offer them discounted purchases at local businesses.

Under the Safe Travels program, all arrivals into the state must have negative Covid test results taken within 72 hours of departure or undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine.

Visitors who opt to take a second test three days after arrival will be given the Kokua Kauai Card.

This gives them a QR code for a list of dozens of local businesses, including hotels and restaurants that will offer discounts.

There are about 60 businesses in the program and more are invited to sign up.

"We wanted an additional layer of security in addition to what Safe Travels provides," Kauai Chamber of Commerce's Mark Perriello told Hawaii Public Radio.

"We're getting as many businesses as possible to offer discounts and promotions to people who take the second test to give them more incentive in addition to just doing the right thing."

The Garden Island is also pushing for visitors to use the AlohaSafe Alert app which alerts usrs if they have been within six feet of anyone who tested positive for Covid within the last two weeks.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been less than 200 Covid cases on Kauai.
