Koh Samui joins race to reopen this summer

Koh Samui wants to be part of the Thailand sandbox reopening programme, joining Phuket and Chiang Mai.

The Thai tourist island's Tourism Promotion Association met with Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn and Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn to present itself as ready for a fast-track reopening.

Under the sandbos scheme, Phuket is due to reopen on 1 July and Chang Mai a month later.

Both destinations will allow quarantine-free entry to vaccinated visitors, and Koh Samui would do the same.

The Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, said the island has been working hard since March preparing for a reopening sometime in the summer.

The Association has requested more vaccines in order to inoculate about 30,000 more residents which would give it 'herd immunity' of about 70% of the population.
