Japan to start issuing vaccine passports next month

Japan will start rolling out vaccine passports to citizens by the end of July.

Paper based vaccine certificates will be issued starting next month, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said.

The certificates could allow vaccinated people to travel abroad and will be available for non-Japanese residents who are vaccinated.

The vaccine certificates will include the holder's date of vaccinations and the vaccine manufacturer in both English and Japanese.

"From the standpoint of establishing a system to quickly issue the certificate, it will be issued as a paper document, but we're making further consideration for an electronic passport," Kato said.

However Japan has no plans yet to implement an electronic system to verify vaccine certificates issued overseas to inbound foreign travellers.

The government said the vaccine certificates will be issued firstly to people planning overseas trips in the near future.

So far, only about 15% of the population have received a Covid jab.
