Pittsburgh Airport to open green terminal

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) will become the first of its kind in the world powered by its own solar panel microgrid and natural gas from airport land.

Technology institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh and a host of Pittsburgh-based tech firms were selected to develop the terminal as part of the Terminal Modernization Program (TMP).

The new 700,000 sq ft terminal will modernize outdated hub facilities across check-in, security checkpoints and baggage claim, and increase indoor space for social distancing as well as introducing new green outdoor terraces airside.

It will feature a new five-story garage for over 3,000 cars with a new rental car facility.

PIT's billion-dollar TMP is expected to create over 5,500 jobs.

"We take our role as a primary gateway into Pittsburgh and the region seriously. That's why our smarter airport will show, and in many cases implement, the current and future innovation coming out of the region," said PIT CEO Christina Cassotis.
