PM confirms scrapping of most Covid restrictions for Freedom Day

Almost all Covid-19 restrictions will be eliminated in England on 19 July, PM Boris Johnson confirmed.

That means an end to social distancing and the limits on gatherings, although there will be guidance to keep social distancing in 'certain situations.'

This will include in airports and other ports of entry, to keep arriving passengers from red-list countries apart from others.

"It is absolutely vital that we proceed now with caution and I cannot say this powerfully or emphatically enough: this pandemic is not over," the PM said.

"This disease continues to carry risks for you and your family."

The 'tough Covid policy' at borders will be maintained, Johnson said.

He said mask use will be recommended 'in crowded and enclosed spaces.'

Johnson said Covid curbs could be reimposed if necessary and the government would not 'hesitate to use the means we have at our disposal.'

The government is encouraging the widespread use of vaccine or test status certification.

For example, nightclubs will be able to reopen next week and are encouraged to use certification to minimise the risk of infections.

Other large events will also be encouraged to use vaccine passports.
