Hope for holidaymakers as France could be taken off amber-plus list

France could soon return to the standard amber list, raising hopes for vaccinated travellers to enjoy holidays without self-isolating on return.

France was recently put on the amber plus' list meaning even vaccinated travellers were forced to isolate on their return but that could be about to change, The Times reports.

Government officials reportedly believe they may have overstated the possible impact of the threat of the Beta variant in France.

'There is growing confidence that France can soon go back on the amber list," a source at Whitehall said.

Only 3.7% of recent cases in France have been from the Beta variant but that number is almost double in Spain.

"There remains some concern about the prevalence of the Beta variant in Spain, although we do not yet have the latest data and… no decision has yet been taken,' the source added.

Still, the Delta variant which is now dominant in the UK  is spreading much faster than the Beta variant and will reportedly 'out-compete' it in the coming weeks.

An update on the traffic light system is expected in early August.
