Unvaccinated should not travel for Labor Day holiday, CDC says

The CDC is advising unvaccinated people not to travel during the upcoming Labor Day weekend amid a surge of Delta variant infections across the country.

"If you are unvaccinated, we would recommend not traveling," CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said at a White House Covid briefing.

Only people who are fully vaccinated and wear masks should travel, she said.

"Throughout the pandemic, we have seen that the vast majority of transmission takes place among unvaccinated people in closed indoor settings," Walensky added.

"Masks are not forever, but they are for now."

The agency recommends spending time outdoors with other vaccinated family members as much as possible over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Although the rate is falling, there are still more than 100,000 cases daily.

The AAA recommends drivers check current weather forecasts before setting off, and take special care if traveling to, from or through hurricane ravaged Louisiana and Mississippi.

"Regionally, travel may still be suffering the after-effects of Hurricane Ida. Still, we won't know more until the damage can be fully assessed in a few days," the AAA said.
