Dr. Fauci backs vaccine mandates for air travel

Dr. Anthony Fauci said he would support vaccine mandates for air travel.

The White House chief medical adviser endorsed a mandate for travel on planes.

During an interview with theSkimm, Fauci said: "I would support that if you want to get on a plane and travel with other people that you should be vaccinated."

Vaccination for air travel is not being seriously considered right now but White House coronavirus response director Jeff Zients hasn't ruled it out either.

"As to travel, we're taking further action to double the fines for noncompliance of masking on airlines," Zients said.

"We have a very strong track record that shows we're pulling available levers to acquire vaccinations and we're not taking any measures off the table."

Fauci also doubled down on support for vaccine mandates in schools.

In fact it will take many more vaccine mandates to eliminate the Delta surge, he said.

"You'd like to have them do it on a totally voluntary basis, but if that doesn't work, you've got to go to the alternatives," said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
