Uber goes cruising in Boston with water taxi service

On-demand ridesharing startup Uber has launched a new service, offering a limited time alternative to rush hour delays in Boston this month.

Commuters and tourists can now use the existing Uber app to hop aboard a water taxi in Boston starting today until June 15.

Provided by Boston Harbor Cruises, UberBOAT is available 6:30 am to 10 pm Monday through Saturday and until 8:00 pm on Sundays, at $10 per person, plus a $1 Uber booking fee.

The price includes a 20% gratuity which will go direct to boat captains, the company said.

Announcing the service on its blog, Uber is inviting users to "get ready to move around Boston in a whole new way."

It provides an interactive map for customers showing which destinations can be accessed on the water, including trips to and from Logan airport.

To use the UberBOAT option on the app, travelers have to be within a quarter-mile radius of the harbor.

Once the app automatically displays the UberBOAT icon on the screen, customers can place a request for pick-up.

"Once a request is accepted, the captain will call to confirm the location and provide additional details on reaching the dock," the company said.

Uber expects the service to be highly popular with both commuters and leisure travelers, especially as the service is only initially available until mid-June.
