Eight people sickened by fumes as Spirit Airlines flight aborted

Eight people were hospitalized when a Spirit Airlines flight returned to the gate at Las Vegas airport due to a strong odor and fumes in the cabin.

The Minneapolis-bound flight had not yet taken off but returned to the terminal where paramedics checked out 15 people.

Of those taken to hospital, only one was a passenger.

Six were cabin crew members as well as one first responder who had unrelated medical issues.

Airline spokesman Derek Dombrowski said the A321 jet was carrying 174 passengers and seven crew members.

The odor smelled like oil, Dombrowski said.

The jet was taken out of service for a full maintenance check and passengers were refunded or given travel credit and accommodated on other flights.

It is the third Spirit Airlines flight to turn around due to an unknown odor of fumes in the cabin in just a few weeks.
