Las Vegas Airport rolls out cannabis 'disposal amnesty boxes'

Authorities at Las Vegas Airport are reminding flyers than pot doesn't fly.

They have decided 'What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas' applies to visitors' marijuana stash too.

The airport has installed large 'cannabis disposal amnesty boxes' which offer flyers a last chance to dispose of any weed still in their possession before security screening.

The large green boxes are easy to spot in front of departure terminal entrances at McCarran Airport with a message stating: 'Disposal for Prescription and Recreational Drugs.'

"Marijuana is prohibited on airport property," said airport spokesperson Christine Crews.

"They will be collecting whatever's surrendered and disposing of it appropriately, depending on what contents are in these boxes," Crews said.

Along with eight states Nevada is now a pot-friendly state but as airports are regulated by federal laws, possession within terminals is a crime.

This is the case even for passengers traveling by air direct to another state which has legalized possession of recreational cannabis.
