Taking off, new airlines target Asia

New airlines continue to roll out across Asia.

Cambodian-owned Royal Group and the San Miguel Corporation - which owns a controlling stake in Philippine Airlines - have jointly created Cambodia Airlines to fly domestic and international routes from Phnom Penh.

Royal Group CFO Mark Hanna said the key benefit would be Phnom Penh's only direct flight to Manila, which would link up with Philippines Airlines flights to the United States.

Domestic flights could begin in June this year and international flights are expected to begin in October.

The new airline will compete with Cambodia Angkor Air, the existing national carrier in which the Cambodian government owns a majority share in a partnership with Vietnam Airlines.

Elsewhere, Golden Myanmar Airlines is introducing its first international service with a flight to Singapore on April 5.

A daily A320 service will fly from Mandalay via Yangon to Singapore's Changi Airport.

Flights to Bangkok, Delhi and Hong Kong are planned.
