Tourist killed in Myanmar land mine blast

A German tourist was killed after a land mine explosion near a popular hiking spot in Myanmar.

It happened near Hsipaw, in Myanmar's Shan province close to a hiking trail popular with travellers.

Tim Geibler, 40, was on a motorbike when he rode over the land mine.

An Argentinian woman was also slightly injured but has since been released from hospital.

Although close to the hiking trail, police said the area was off-limits due to land mines.

"He suffered serious injuries to his chest, waist and leg. He died on the spot," said Ko Myo of the Hsipaw Social Volunteers Without Borders group.

The 2019 Land Mine Monitor Report was published just a week ago and said there were 430 landmine casualties in Myanmar in 2018.

Three years ago, two German tourists and their trekking guide were wounded in a land mine explosion in Shan province.
