New resort making splash with hurricane-proof buildings

The latest resort/conference center in Key West is notable not only for its luxury and 24-hour concierge service but also for its ability to withstand 205 mile-an-hour hurricane winds.

The Beachside Resort & Conference Center opening this month has a lobby and conference center designed to handle winds far in excess of typical category 5, which is 155-mile-an-hour winds.

Guest rooms have such luxury touches as marble flooring throughout, open gourmet kitchens and waterfront views.

The Beachside Ballroom has 6,000 square feet and can seat up to 400.

Hotel guests also have access to a private beach on the Gulf of Mexico with a 20-slip marina.
