Pauline Frommer releases cruise insight for today's traveler

At last weekend's L.A. Times Travel & Adventure Show held at The LA Convention Center, travel guide writer Pauline Frommer shared a few tips for fellow cruise travelers.

Always use a cruise agent to book your trip because you are more likely to get extras, such as  ship-board amenities and travel to and from the port. Cruisecompete.com is a site where cruise passengers can shop for an agent and a price for a particular destination.

Never take a shore excursion offered by your cruise operator. To save money, you can do it on your own or book companies that specialize in less expensive options, such as shoretrips.com.

Show some restraint. Once you are on the ship they’ve got you, Frommer points out, so be careful about the added costs of drinks and gambling; you can easily run up a tab that would wipe out whatever you saved on the fare.

Find a cruise that fits not just a destination but something you like to do while on board.

  • re: shore excursion booking

I know so many people book their own shore excursions, but to recommend it, I think is irresponsible. What if they're late, for wahtever reason, coming back to the ship? The ship will not wait unless you book it with them.
