Brits defy danger zones

Almost half of UK travellers would go to a country undergoing a political crisis or natural disaster despite the obvious risks, according to a poll.

A survey of 1,139 HolidayExtras.com customers during April 2011 found that:

12% admitted they would fly to a dangerous destination if they couldn’t get a refund

23% said they’d be prepared to risk personal safety for a business trip

7% claimed they would actually single out a risky destination

58% declared they wouldn't head to a country in crisis in a million years.

"I am quite surprised at just how many travellers would be willing to put their lives at risk for an overseas stay,” said Anthony Clarke Cowell, HolidayExtras.com's head of product innovation and development.

  • Danger zones are real zones

There's a lot to be said for visiting a country when its tourist infrastructure has broken down. One sees the place as it is at that moment rather than the Disneyland version which visitors often receive. It's also at such a moment that people most need the income from visitors because there are so few of them.
