Girl, 7, dies after being found unconscious in holiday park pool

An investigation is underway after a seven-year-old girl died after being found unconscious in a swimming pool at a Norfolk holiday resort on Sunday.

The child was pulled from the water at the five-star Waveney River Centre, near Beccles, just after midday.

She was taken by air ambulance to James Paget Hospital in Gorleston but died four hours later.

Norfolk police said: "The death is currently being treated as unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious."

A statement from the Waveney River Centre said the girl was at a private swimming party when the tragedy happened.

"Obviously our thoughts are with the family and friends of the child involved. As a family business we are devastated by this tragedy.

"We wish to thank the paramedics, our staff and customers who did everything possible to assist the child and her family, and the police and local authority officers who have been outstandingly professional during these early stages of their investigation.

"Out of respect for the girl's family, we will not be re-opening the pool straight away and hope that our guests will understand our decision.

"We are not able to add anything further at this time and we would ask the media to respect the privacy of the family involved and our team here who are deeply shocked at the day's events."

The holiday park has luxury holiday lodges and camping, or visitors can come for the day to hire day cruisers, canoes and kayaks.

It has been awarded David Bellamy's Gold Conservation Award for the past four years.
