Seven die in cable car accident in India

Seven people plummeted to their deaths and dozens more tourists had to be rescued after an Indian cable car mishap in high winds.

The accident happened in the popular Kashmir mountain resort of Gulmarg when an uprooted tree hit the cables, said district police chief Imtiyaz Ahmad.

Two children were among the dead along with their parents and three tour guides.

All are thought to be Indian nationals.

Rescue workers assisted a further 150 people stranded in cable cars, a police statement said.

Gulmarg is the most popular hill resort of its kind in India although tourist numbers are down this season due to on-going civil unrest in Kashmir.

"For the industry, this unfortunate accident could not have come at a worst time," director of the state tourism department, Mahmood Ahmad Shah.

Referring to the accident he said: "There was no deviation from the standard operating procedure. The weather suddenly turned bad and strong winds caused the uprooting of a tree that fell on the cable."

The cable car service is expected to remain closed for several days pending the arrival of a specialist team from France to inspect the system.
