Thomas Cook launches 'choose your room' service

Thomas Cook has launched a new service that allows customers to choose their specific hotel room before they leave home.

For a €30 fee, per booking, customers can see the floor plan of the hotel and then select a specific room from those available in their room category.

They will receive an invite to use the service six days before departure.

The new initiative is initially available in 50 hotels, across all six of Thomas Cook's own-brands, in destinations including Gran Canaria, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Majorca and Tenerife.

Thomas Cook says it will be available in 300 hotels by summer 2018.

Its research showed 87% of customers said they would likely use the service and a trial in a small number of hotels resulted in a 20% conversion rate.

Thomas Cook claims it is the first UK package holiday company to offer the option.

UK managing director Chris Mottershead said: "We have always prided ourselves a pioneer in the travel industry and this innovation is receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from the customers who've taken advantage of it."

Agents are being informed of the new service via a video, so they can explain how it works to their customers.

    I did think of the name "Universal" but rejected it as that name was at one time used by Sky Tours (who eventually became Thomson) and I didn't think there were two "universal" companies.

  • You're 40 years too late T.C.!

    A company called Universal Holidays offered this in the 1960's. They specialised in 1 departure per week to Majorca from LGW and agents held a booklet that contained plans of each featured hotel. When phoning through to book, customers could choose their preferred room from the plan and a small, gold, cardboard "key" with the requested room number was attached to the confirmation/invoice. As far as I am aware, they still own many of the hotels and operate from Switzerland now. I hope that helps your memory Richard English!

    ...but in the 1960s, when I was a travel agent, there was a small tour operator who gave its clients their hotel room number at the time of booking. I believe they were a single-destination operator, so Thomas Cook are certainly the pioneers in offering this facility to multiple destinations - and of course the poineers in allowing customers to select their room(s) from a massive range. . If the name comes back to me then I'll post again.

  • Just another money maker

    So if you don't use the service it will now be way more likely you will be assigned a less desireable room, so people will feel the need to pre-book to avoid the nasties and so its a good way of adding another 30 Euro to each booking. And like seat requests on certain UK airlines - the price will soon rise beyond belief.
