More Alpine resorts open early

You might think that the start of the ski season is still a few weeks away, but several resorts across the Alps are already open after a huge snow storm earlier this week.

Verbier will join the growing list of resorts ready to welcome skiers from Friday, when it will open the Lac des Vaux area.

The Swiss resort will open only at the weekends until December 2, the official start to its season.

Other resorts in Switzerland that are already open include Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Engelberg, Davos and Laax.

In France, only the high-altitude resort of Tignes is open, but others are making plans as more snow is forecast over the next few days.

In Austria, several resorts with glaciers have opened early, including Hintertux and Solden. Obergurgl, which is popular with British skiers, will open on November 16.

In Italy, the lifts are turning in Cervinia and Val Senales while in Norway the resort of Beitostolen is offering skiing and in Finland Levi and Ruka are up and running.
