Eurostar trains cancelled today and tomorrow

Eurostar has been forced to cancel a number of trains to and from Paris, Lille and Brussels today and tomorrow as French railway workers begin three months of rolling strikes.

The industrial action, called in protest at French president Emmanual Macron's attempts to modernize the country's economy, are also likely to disrupt services throughout the rest of the spring and into early summer.

Unions plan to strike for two days in every five in an attempt to force Macron to re-think plans to shake up the SNCF rail monopoly and open it up to competition, as required by EU law.

Eurostar passengers with tickets for cancelled services over the next two days are being offered an alternative trip or a full refund.

The cross-Channel train operator is also warning passengers making onward journeys in France over the next tow days that French domestic rail services will be disrupted by the SNCF strikes.

Those who have booked connecting journeys in France and wish to cancel or change their bookings should contact Eurostar. It said requests would be fulfilled subject to availability.

As a consequence of the strike today and tomorrow, trains to Disneyland Paris have been re-routed. They will now depart at 10.14 from London, 10.34 from Ebbsfleet and 10.58 from Ashford and will arrive in Paris instead at 14.03 instead of Marne-la-Vallee with a scheduled stop in Lille. The return trains will depart from Paris Gare du Nord instead of Marne-la-Vallee.

In a message on its website, Eurostar said: "If you are travelling in the weeks ahead, please continue to check back here for more information to see if your journey if affected."

  • There's a massive difference ...

between the cushy conditions enjoyed by the French 'cheminots' (railway workers) and the conditions that many UK workers have to put up with. French TV often highlights UK zero hours contracts and most French people think that such contracts are beyond the pail. All the same, few people in France get such generous conditions as the 'cheminots', but it's the country as a whole that has to pay for them. Although the left doesn't like it, there is, I believe, a political consensus that things cannot continue as they have done & that something has to be done. I've lived in France for the last 27 years and unemployment has hardly ever been less than 9% in all those years!

  • Standing up and being counted

Good luck to them I say. The last thing they should have is the sort of job insecurity they have here in the UK.
