Airline bans larger passengers and infants from business class on 787s




Larger passengers and parents with infants have been banned from flying business class on Thai Airways' new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

The new 'Zodiac Cirrus' seats in Thai's Royal Silk class have been fitted with new airbag systems and safety belts that cannot extend round waists more than 56-inches thick and can't accommodate parents with children on their laps, said the airline.

Normally larger passengers and parents are issued with a safety belt extender, but Thai says the new airbags must be centred over the traveller's waist to be safe and effective.

Thai Airways took delivery of the two 787-900s in September to operate flights from Bangkok to Auckland and Taipei.

The airline also plans to use the larger Dreamliner on longer flights to destinations including the US. Currently it operates the smaller 787-800 and Airbus A350s on flights to Europe.

    The seats in question are fitted with an airbag, and the ban is for the safety of the passenger. What's wrong? Nothing of course, just a headline that gets bods who don't read it all hot under their collar. Plenty of seats available for the obese with Thai, just not these seats. ...."The airline, known as THAI, has fitted the safety belts in its premium cabin with airbags. The idea is to meet strict requirements on passenger survivability: basically, preventing the traveller"s head impacting the back of the seat in front in the event of sudden deceleration.".....

  • Do Not Fly Thai

    Agreed with William Clarke. Regardless of use of 787-best option is Not to Fly Thai. Spend money on a better airline, which is happy to provide services to all sized passengers. A person's size has no correlation with class and not all people who eat pies are over weight. The reason for being heavy remain as unique as each human being. It's a matter of choice - Thai airways management decides to stop larger passengers from flying their 787s so larger passengers need to choose to either fly first or do not fly Thai. I would go with the latter and fly another airline. 1 Business class pax and 20 of my family's revenue lost by Thai due to this policy.

  • Socioeconomics

    If you look at the socioeconomic status (SES) profile of developed societies, you'll see that higher SES are significantly less obese that lower SES. And higher SES are significantly more likely to fly business class. I don't see the problem. TG introduces enhanced safety features that assume (and are only effective with) non-obese body proportions. If a passenger can't fit into a generously dimensioned seat, then they need to look for other options

  • Sounds good to me

    This sounds like a good idea to me. After all it is business class so it will add a bit of class. The last thing you want in business class is a screaming kid or somebody who has ate 1 too many pies. Obese people should be made to buy 2 seats on planes, buses and trains because they take up too much space.

    The simple answe is DO NOT FLY THAI. When half of the worlds population are now classed as 'obese' they should be catering for the many not the few as the politians say.
