One dead, many injured in South Africa plane crash

One person was killed and 20 others were injured when a plane crashed north of the South African capital Pretoria yesterday.

The plane came down near Wonderboom Airport.

Details of the crash have yet to be released, but authorities confirmed that the plane hit a factory building before crashing.

Local news outlet ENCA quoted an eyewitness saying: "I just saw something dropping down from the sky, but I didn't know what it was, and the next thing I saw was an explosion and a big bang."

The charted Convair 340 is believed to have crashed shortly after taking off from Wonderboom.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority is expected to issue a statement with further details today.

While some media reports claimed the aircraft was operated by Dutch airline Martinair, others claimed it was a cargo plane that had recently been painted in the historic livery of Martin's Air, a subsidiary of Air France-KLM. It was claimed on Twitter that the plane was en route to the Aviodrome theme park in the Netherlands, where it was to be on display.
