Barbados takes to the Solent to promote sailing week

Barbados Tourism took the waters of the Solent last weekend to promote its very own sailing week.

It used the Isle of Wight Round the Island Race as an opportunity to use an innovative 'bob-up' dispensary RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) festooned with Bajan goodies for the competing crews.

Barbados Sailing week is the Caribbean race season's opening regatta and replaces the Mount Gay Round Barbados Series.

Organised by Barbados Cruising Club, in association with Barbados Tourism Marketing and Mount Gay, the event is expected to attract top class competitors and takes place on January 16-24.

The Isle of Wight Round the Island Race, one of the largest yacht races in the world, was an ideal occasion to promote the Barbados event.

T-shirts and miniature bottles of the world-famous Mount Gay Rum were handed out as the RIB came alongside competing yachts.

Marc McCollin of Barbados Tourism said: "Using the RIB to get amongst the competitors whilst on the water was an ideal way of promoting our event. It captured the fun and spirt of the Bajan culture and surprisingly nobody declined our offer of Mount Gay Rum!"
