Spanish airports face strike threat

Ground handling staff at Spanish airports are threatening strike action later this summer.

The possible strikes, by three unions, could affect some 60,000 workers and are being threatened after two years of failed negotiations about wages and working conditions.

The action is being considered for August but could be at the end of this month.

Unions have lodged a request with the mediation and arbitration service to try to reach an agreement and avoid industrial action in the peak summer season.

Meanwhile, airport cleaners in the Balearics are threatening to strike again this summer in a pay dispute.

A walk-out last summer left airports strewn with litter and passengers describing the conditions as apocalyptic.

The news of summer strike action comes after Irish pilots unions gave notice of two further strikes this month on July 20 and July 24.
