Tourists injured in train crash near Machu Picchu

Several foreign tourists have been hurt in a crash between two passenger trains near Machu Picchu, Peru's most visited tourist site.

Two trains operated by competing rail companies are understood to have crashed on the main route to the Inca ruins from the village of Ollantaytambo near Cusco in the south of the country.

At least 10 people were injured, five of them seriously, according to Peru's civil defence institute.

It is thought that a train operated by IncaRail was hit from behind by a train operated by PeruRail.

The majority of injured passengers are believed to have been on the PeruRail train. The operator said they were taken away in ambulances.

The rail company said it was investigating the cause of the crash.
