Human foetus found on American Airlines' flight

New York authorities have launched an investigation after cleaners found what is thought to be a human foetus on an American Airlines' aircraft at New York's LaGuardia Airport.

American Airlines Flight 1942 from Charlotte landed at LaGuardia late on Monday and the discovery wasn't made until the following morning.

"The OCME can confirm we're investigating what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane. We will release determination when investigation is complete," the New York Office of Chief Medical Examiner said in a statement.

The A321 was taken out of service, which caused some delays for passengers early on Tuesday.

According to an unnamed law enforcement source, the foetus appeared to be about six months old.

Investigators are checking passenger records and CCTV footage for any woman visibly pregnant who boarded the flight.

"As we continue to learn more about this tragic and sensitive situation, we are actively cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation," said American Airlines spokesman Matthew Miller.
