A bounty of new places to stay awaits visitors to New York State this autumn

New York State is one of the best places to visit in the autumn or 'Fall', as its vibrant colours spread and harvest festivals kick into gear. And this autumn the State also boasts a rich array of new, updated and redesigned places to stay, from mountainside glamping to a sleek urban hotel complete with an indoor basketball court, to a historic inn filled with ghostly tales!

Here is a region-by-region overview of the new and recently renewed places to stay this autumn:

·         Home2 Suites by Hilton Queensbury Glens Falls (Queensbury), a pet-friendly hotel (for pets up to 50 pounds), has 92 studio and one-bedroom units equipped with kitchens and free Wi-Fi. There's also a heated indoor pool, patio with fire pit, fitness centre, laundry, complimentary breakfast and business services.

·         Courtyard by Marriott - Albany Troy/Waterfront (Troy), opening in October, will feature an inviting riverfront patio with three fire pits, 132 guest rooms, a fitness centre, indoor pool and whirlpool.

·         Tru by Hilton Albany Crossgates Mall (Guilderland), scheduled to open in October next to Crossgates Mall, will include a swimming pool, fitness centre and outdoor sport court along with the brand's four-zoned lobby for work, dining, lounging and socializing.

The Catskills

·         Eastwind Hotel & Bar (Windham), a 1920s bunkhouse turned boutique hotel, features a sauna, fire pits and 19 accommodations options. These include three glamping cabins—wooden A-frames with a full-wall window affording stunning views. All are outfitted with queen beds in Frette linens, wildlife journals, a fire pit for grilling and access to a private bathroom. Bikes, backpacks, rain boots, snowshoes and other sports equipment are provided.

·         The Woodhouse Lodge (Greenville), a "Shaker-meets Mid-Century Modern" 10-room mountain hotel, incorporates details such as handmade felt and leather headboards, antique and vintage decor and locally crafted bath amenities. There's also a cosy lounge with an honour bar and an oversized fireplace, plus an outdoor patio, BBQ grills, hammocks and a fire pit. Event space for up to 100 guests is in the works.

Central New York

·         Amsterdam Castle (Amsterdam) wows guests as they enter its 100-foot long Grand Hall with its 44-foot high ceiling and suits of armour lining the walls as though awaiting their knights. Designed by renowned 19th century Victorian architect Isaac G. Perry in the style of a European castle, this former armoury is now a 23-room boutique inn that feels like a cross between a museum and a five-star hotel.

·         Delta Hotels by Marriott Utica (downtown Utica), a 162-room hotel, features a fitness centre, indoor pool and event space that can accommodate groups from simple business meetings to gatherings of up to 500 people.

·         The Chautauqua Harbor Hotel (Celoron) offers upscale lakeside lodgings, where guests can relax around indoor and outdoor pools, work out in the fitness centre and savour the scenery at the Lakeview Grill. Located in the hometown of comedienne Lucille Ball, the $33 million, 135-room hotel also has a ballroom with banquet space for up to 300 guests.

·         DoubleTree by Hilton (Jamestown) is a 147-room hotel with 4,000 square feet of banquet and meeting space, a full-service restaurant and a gastropub.

Finger Lakes

·         Owego's Parkview Inn (Owego) first opened more than 150 years ago and is on New York State's Haunted History Trail for paranormal spirit activity. Owners Beth and Mark Johnson, who have been operating the Dugan House Restaurant and Pub in the historic building since 2011, are adding 14 historically-authentic rooms, slated to open in this fall. The Inn faces a gorgeous park along the riverfront.

·         Hilton Garden Inn Corning Downtown (Corning) recently opened with 125 rooms, an indoor pool, fitness centre and restaurant. The hotel is located just two blocks from the Corning Museum of Glass and an easy walk to downtown attractions.

·         Tru by Hilton Syracuse North Airport Area (Liverpool) just north of Syracuse near the NYS Thruway and I-81, has 93 rooms, a cutting-edge fitness centre and the brand's distinctive open lobby with areas for guests to work, lounge, play and eat while connecting with others.

Hudson Valley

·         The Wick Hotel (Hudson) is a 55-room boutique hotel located on the site of a former candle and soap factory. A Tribute Portfolio property, it combines historic elements like claw foot bathtubs, high ceilings and original hardwood floor with modern flair. Its rooftop event space affords sweeping views of the Hudson Valley. Guests also have use of a 24/7 fitness centre and electric car plugs.

·         Jesse's Harvest House & Lodge (Tannersville) known for its restaurant, now has six cosy guest rooms with private bath, free Wi-Fi and daily breakfast. The vibe is rustic country and the mountain views are glorious.

·         New Concorde Bed and Breakfast (East Chatham) underwent a total renovation that added all the modern conveniences to the one-time Public House stagecoach stop while preserving its 1780s look and feel, right down to the player piano in the parlour. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, New Concorde honours its history by naming each guest room for a different local historic figure.

·         Pine Ridge Dude Ranch (Kerhonkson), located on the property of the former Pinegrove Ranch, is an all-inclusive family resort offering horseback, pony and tractor rides, an indoor pool, a game room and laser tag. There's also a private lake with paddleboats and fishing. Accommodation choices include large family-friendly rooms with bunk beds that sleep up to seven and two rooms with fireplaces.

·         Troutbeck (Amenia) has a long history of hosting writers and thought-leaders, from Mark Twain and Henry David Thoreau to President Theodore Roosevelt. Recently refurbished and now a member of Design Hotels, its guest rooms feature king-sized beds with Frette linens, plush robes and Malin + Goetz bath products.

Long Island

·         Journey East Hampton (East Hampton) features secluded cottages and 22 newly redesigned rooms, all outfitted with Frette linens and towels. There's also an outdoor pool and a welcoming lobby lounge. Its Great Lawn is a perfect spot for picnics and s'mores around the fire pit.

Thousand Islands - Seaway

·         Tailwater Lodge (Altmar) is adding 46 rooms, nearly doubling the capacity of the lodge, and upgrading existing rooms. The expansion also includes a full-service spa, indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, fitness centre and game room.
