Hotels damaged in Florida hurricane

Hurricane Michael has left 'unimaginable destruction' along Florida's coastline, according to State Governor Rick Scott.

The US Government has declared a major disaster for Hurricane Michael, which struck earlier this week.

Marriott issued a statement saying some of its hotels have sustained damage although most have stayed open.

It said its management teams are evaluating the status of hotels and working closely with local authorities.

"We express our appreciation for the efforts of authorities, emergency responders and other officials in supporting the affected communities," it said.

"Efforts are underway to fully restore operations but some hotels may have temporary interruption or limited availability of guest services."

It said hotels in the affected area are reviewing their cancellation fees.

Marriott International is supporting the American Red Cross in its efforts to respond to the disaster, which has killed at least six people.

Hurricane Michael struck on Wednesday with winds of 155mph. More then 370,000 people in Florida were ordered to evacuate but officials believe many ignored the warning.
