British woman missing in New Zealand

Concerns are growing for the safety of a British backpacker who went missing in New Zealand on Saturday.

Grace Millane, aged 22 from Essex, was last seen at the Auckland Sky City complex and did not respond to messages on her birthday on Sunday.

Her family, who spoke with the University of Lincoln graduate almost every day, say it is 'completely out of character' for her not to get in touch

Det Insp Scott Beard of Auckland City Police told the BBC that more than 20 staff were working on the case.

He added: "Clearly this is a very stressful time for Grace's family and the longer she remains missing, the more our concern grows for her safety and wellbeing."

A number of unconfirmed sightings have been reported to the force.

Ms Millane had initially joined a six-week group trip through South America but then travelled alone to New Zealand, where she had been for a couple of weeks before she went missing.

Her father is understood to have flown out to New Zealand to help with the search. The Foreign Office said it was providing support to Auckland police.
