Seven get life in prison for Tunisia attacks

Seven jihadists have been given life sentences over gun and grenade attacks on tourists in Tunisia in 2015.

The first attack was at the Bardo Museum in Tunis in March 2015, killing 22 people.

In June, 38 holidaymakers were shot dead when a lone gunman opened fire and threw grenades on a beach and in a hotel at Port El Kantaoui near Sousse.

Most of them were British holidaymakers staying with Thomson at the Hotel Riu Imperial Marhaba.

Islamic State militants said they carried out both attacks.

Four militants were given life sentences for the Sousse attack and five others were sentenced to between six months and 16 years. A further 17 were acquitted.

Among those facing trial were six security personnel accused of failing to help people in danger.

Three people also got life sentences for the Bardo attack and others were jailed for shorter periods. At least 10 were acquitted.

The man who is believed to have masterminded both attacks has not yet been caught but there are reports that he might have been killed in a US air strike in Libya.

Three gunmen - two in the Bardo attack and one in Sousse - were shot dead at the scene.

Following the trial, a former travel agent and now travel lecturer Suzanne Richards, who lost her son, brother and father in the Tunisian beach massacre, told the Daily Mail the life sentences would never compensate her loss.~

Her younger son, Owen, survived the attack and the pair have since set up a charity, SmileForJoel, to help shattered/broken families who are victims of traumatic bereavement through homicide.
