Key West banning some sunscreens

Key West is the latest destination declaring war on harmful sunscreen products.

It will ban the sale of sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are thought to cause coral bleaching and other toxic effects to marine life.

Last week the City Commission voted 6-to-1 to ban the sale of some sunscreens.

The ban would come into effect at the start of 2021.

"Our coral has been under attack by a number of stressors. We just thought if there was one thing we could do, to take one of the stressors away, it was our responsibility to do so," said ," Mayor Teri Johnston.

Key West isn't the first to pass legislation.

Hawaii recently passed a similar ban which kicks in the same day as Key West.

The Pacific nation of Palau also announced a sunscreen ban last year.

The sunscreen ban in Hawaii was criticized by members of the medical profession who believe it will ultimately result in more skin cancer cases as vacationers go without sunscreen protection.

However there are several sunscreen products on the market which do not contain the banned chemicals.
