Move over staycation...

What do you get if you cross a gap year with a staycation with a short break? A 'microgap', of course. Well, that's according to VisitEngland anyway.

The tourist board has come up with the term as part of a campaign to inspire young Brits to take short breaks on their home turf.

It has released a series of digital animations to entice young people into trying experiences and activities typically taken during a gap-year but which can be condensed into a domestic break of one to three nights.

Experiences include walking with Alpacas in the Lake District and painting murals in Manchester.

The series of seven 10-second clips are being displayed on digital billboards across 100 locations including railway stations and shopping centres in England, Scotland and Wales.

The campaign will run for three weeks and follows research by VisitEngland into the travel habits of young Brits which showed that 24% of 18-to-34 year olds were likely to take a career break to travel in the next three years.

Statistics also show that 16-34 year olds took almost 1.4 million fewer holidays in Britain than a decade previously.

The#MyMicrogap campaign builds on an earlier campaign in 2017 which targeted the 'lost generation' of young Brits to take a holiday at home.
