Club Med to open ski resort near Beijing

Club Med will expand its winter resort portfolio in China with a new ski resort near Beijing.

The now Chinese-owned company hopes to tap into the growing demand for ski holidays as Beijing gears up to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Club Med has so far disclosed few details about the new resort but it will be located in the Chongli district, which is about three hours from Beijing.

"There is a shortage of ski resorts and facilities in China. We are planning to open more ski resorts in northern China and in Hebei, close to Beijing," Qian Jiannong, CEO of Club Med owner Fosun Tourism Group told the South China Morning Post.

Club Med already has two ski resorts in Northeastern China.

Fosun Tourism Group will begin construction of two more tourist resorts in Lijiang in Yunnan province, and Taicang in Jiangsu province later this year.

Its Club Med portfolio now numbers 69 resorts globally with six open across China including Sanya in Hainan.

Fosun took control of Club Med in 2015 for more than $1 billion.

Revenues at Club Med rose 8% last year with operating profit up by more than 40%.
