Sri Lanka's Shangri-La to reopen this week

One of the three Sri Lanka hotels targeted in the Easter Sunday terror attacks will partially re-open this week.

The Shangri-La in the capital Colombo will reopen its Sapphyr Lounge, Capital Bar & Grill and Kaema Sutra today. Guests will be able to stay at the hotel from Saturday, when the Chi spa will also re-open.

The luxury hotel was one of three to be bombed on April 21, together with three churches in Sri Lanka. The two other hotels, Kingsbury Hotel and Cinnamon Grand, also in Colombo, have recently re-opened.

In total, more than 250 people were killed in the attacks, including eight Britons and many tourists staying at the hotels.

The Shangri-La has supported the communities impacted and marks the reopening with funds for continuing medical assistance, counselling, scholarships and vocational training.

"In memory of, and to honour, those that lost their lives on that day, the Shangri-La Group will be making an initial contribution to the Dialog Foundation," it said.

The UK Foreign Office, which warned against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka following the attacks, has since relaxed its advice.
