Celebrity ship runs aground in the Galapagos

Guests and crew of the Celebrity Xpedition had to be evacuated late Tuesday after the ship ran aground in the Galapagos Islands.

All 46 passengers and most crew members were taken off the vessel with no injuries reported, parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd said.

"We are unaware of any environmental impact at this point but we will continue to check closely," Royal Caribbean said in a statement.

Some essential crew members remained aboard as guests were picked up by sister ship Celebrity Flora 'as a precautionary measure.'

Celebrity Xpedition was on a week-long Galapagos cruise.

An update on the ship's condition will be disclosed soon.

Cruise ship and yacht operations in the Galapagos National Park area are highly regulated.

These include what sites may be visited, and at what time of the day as well as well as a cap on the number of passengers and the activities allowed within the park.
